Speeding bus hits auto; two dead, four injured

A speeding bus hit an auto rickshaw in front of Salt Lake’s City Centre claiming two lives, critically injuring four others.

The auto was full with the passengers going to Ultadanga from Karunamoyee via City Centre. A private bus of route number 215 A/1, which goes to Howrah from Karunamoyee, was also going in the same direction when it smashed into the auto directly.

The intensity of the collision was so high that the auto went 25 feet backwards. The passenger, recognised as Arindam Banerjee and the driver, Shambhu Naskar from Basanti Colony, who were both sitting in the front seat, died on the spot.

Two women and a youth, who were sitting in the rear seat, received injuries and were admitted to hospital in a critical situation.

The police seized the killer bus from the stand but could not get hold of the accused driver. The auto was completely mangled.

The locals, who were standing on the other side of the road, rushed to the spot. They rescued the trapped persons inside and took them to the hospital.

The Bidhannagar City Police have started a probe. “The driver of the killer vehicle will be booked soon. We have taken all the details about him from the stand,” said a police officer. ”Both the vehicles were speeding and flouted the traffic rules. The auto rickshaw sped towards City Centre as the overcrowded bus also moved in the same direction,” the officer added.

The officer informed that the passengers had raised their voice against the killer driver, which is why he escaped from the bus. Police took firsthand accounts from those passengers who were then sitting in the bus.
