Speed regulator to be installed in vehicles to check reckless driving

To check the reckless driving of vehicles, the State government has decided to install ‘speed governor’ in all the commercial vehicles.

The state transport department has made it mandatory for the vehicles to be fitted with the ‘speed governor’ so that their speed can be checked.

In view of the growing number of road accidents due to reckless driving of the vehicles the Transport department has initiated the move. According to a senior official of the state transport department the new system will be made operational from April. The vehicles which will hit the road without the equipment will be caught by the police and transport department. This will also check the level of pollution in the state.

State transport department will fix the top speed of vehicles. In case of school buses, tankers, the highest speed will be fixed at 60 km per hour. A transport department official said that the equipment will help in the less consumption of fuel which in turn will help in controlling the air pollution in the city. General goods carrying vehicles and busses will be allowed to run at a maximum speed of 80 km per hour.

The vehicles which will be built after October this year will be fitted with the equipment by the manufacturer, while the old vehicles have to install the machines. It may be mentioned that various states like Karnataka, Kerala had already introduced the ‘speed governor’ to check the reckless drive and air pollution. The Supreme Court had issued an order to install the machine. There was a considerable amount of delay in implementing the Supreme Court order following some reasons. From April this year not a single vehicle will be allowed without being fitted with the equipment.

The equipment will be fitted with the fuel tanker of the vehicle and will reduce the consumption of fuel. Senior transport department officials believe that this will help in controlling the speed of the vehicles within the city. Over-speeding of vehicles has become a great cause of concern for the police as well as the transport department.

“If we can restrict the speed of the vehicles in the city, it can check the road accidents. It will be mandatory for all the vehicles to have a ‘speed governor’. We will not allow a single vehicle if not fitted with the machine,” a senior official of the transport department said.
