Southern Railways okays khadi products via green channel system

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission got a much-needed shot in the arm as the Southern Railways has agreed to allow it to supply its products through green channel system.

In other words, it is now enough for the Commission to provide a self certificate of quality for its supplies with test results from laboratories that were either approved or recognised or the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), an autonomous body under the Central Government’s Department of Science and Technology.

Till now, the Southern Railway had been insisting that the supplies be also inspected by the Quality Assurance Wing of the DGS&D, which is the Central purchase organisation of Government of India under Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The Southern Railway agreed to do away with this procedure following a request from KVIC Chairman VK Saxena.

KVIC Chairman, in a letter to Southern Railway General Manager V Johri pointed out that there was no provision for DGS&D inspection in the rate contract and that all other zonal Railways were also following the green channel system. KVIC is carrying out various schemes and programmes for promoting khadi and village industries sector in the country.
