Smog-hit Delhi decides to clean up its act

With the smog refusing to go and Diwali pollution likely to add to people’s woes, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit convened an emergency meeting on Monday to take stock of the situation. It was decided immediate steps like checking entry of unauthorised vehicles and stopping all construction activity would be taken to improve air quality. At the meeting, which was attended among others by Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) chairman Bhure Lal and Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) director Sunita Narain, it was decided all commercial vehicles that are not ‘destined for Delhi’ would not be allowed in the city. For this purpose, five check posts on borders with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana will be set up.

Transport department and Delhi police have been asked to start a campaign against polluting vehicles and impose heavy fine amounting to Rs 2,000.

Sources said the meeting also explored the possibility of discouraging the use of diesel generator (DG) sets during social functions. It was decided to explore the use of battery-operated LED lights during marriage processions instead of DG sets.

After the meeting, Dikshit said: ‘There are certain natural causes apart from man-made ones. It is feasible to eliminate man-made causes by strict implementation of existing rules.’
