Six projects to decentralise water supply, says DJB

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) CEO Sajjan Singh Yadav on Sunday said the board had taken up six projects on pilot-basis for decentralised water supply and treatment of sewage at local small treatment plants.

“Six colonies — Gautampuri near Aali Gaon, Aya Nagar village, Sai Nagar, Kair village, Sonia Vihar A-Block and Begam Vihar B-Block — have been selected for the project,” he said.

Yadav said treated water from the STPs in the colonies would be used for non-drinking purposes through double-piping. The sludge produced would be used as manure towards greening efforts in the respective areas.

“The estimated cost of the projects is Rs 95.32 crore, expected to benefit around 50,000 people living in these areas. The Board’s focus is on improving the living conditions of residents of unauthorised colonies,” the DJB CEO said. At present, piped water supply is available in 1,100 of the 1,642 unauthorised colonies while sewer system is available in only 210 unauthorised colonies. Many Delhi villages lack piped water as well as sewerage.
