Six persons arrested for smuggling narcotics

Six persons including five from Nepal were arrested from Pradhan Nagar in Siliguri on charges of smuggling narcotics substances. A huge quantity of charas, brown sugar and cocaine worth a few crore were found from them.

Acting on a tip off, officers of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) conducted a raid along with the jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) and arrested all six of them.

They found all six of them sitting in a four wheeler which was parked aside a road and it raised their suspicion. They asked all of them to come out of the car and searched the entire vehicle. Around 8 kg charas, 140 gram of brown sugar, 140 gram of methaqualone and 240 gram of cocaine were found from inside the car. “We are yet to assess the actual cost of the seized narcotics substances, but it would not be less a few crores,” said an NCB officer.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two of the six arrested youth are the dealers and rest four accused work as agents under them. According to the plan, the agents were asked to meet the dealers at Pradhan Nagar from where they were supposed to take the consignment to distribute in different parts. On Saturday their plans failed as the NCB officers and BSF jawans caught them red handed. The car has also been seized.

Later, the NCB officers came to know that the racket had been operating in the area for the past few months.

The officer said that this is a major breakthrough as they will get information about other members of this international drug peddling racket from the arrested youth.

It may be recalled that on Friday, Barasat Court had sentenced a convict Ansar Ali to death and another Dipak Giri to imprisonment for 30 years on charges of peddling drugs. Capital punishment on charges of drug peddling is rare in the country.
