Six nabbed for illegal arms in Assam

The army and Assam police, during a joint operation, recovered four AK-47 rifles and ammunition from the Paneri area of Lower Assam's Udalguri district Wednesday, army sources said.

All the recovered illegal arms belonged to surrendered militants, the sources said. The recovery assumes significance as the Army had launched an operation in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD), particularly after the recent communal clashes in two BTAD districts - Kokrajhar and Chirang. The Assam government had asked the Army to launch a special operation in BTAD to seize all illegal arms and ammunition after reports surfaced that illegal arms were used in large numbers during the violence in BTAD.

Udalguri police said that the army handed over six persons to police in connection with possession of illegal arms and ammunition.

The six persons arrested were all Bodo tribals, police said.
