Six killed, 57 injured in three road accidents

Six people were killed and 57 others injured in three separate road accidents in the state.  In an accident that took place on National Highway 6 at Uluberia, four members of a family died after the driver of their car lost control over it and the vehicle overturned. Police said that the car was at a top speed when it rammed into a divider while overtaking another vehicle. Five other members of the family were taken to Uluberia hospital. The condition of some of the injured passengers is stated to be critical. 

Police said that two passengers died on the spot while other two were declared brought dead after being taken to the hospital. The victims were going to Calcutta airport from Nandakumar in East Midnapore when they met with the accident near Birshibpur area in Uluberia. Police suspect that the driver could not control the speeding car. The incident occurred at around 6 am. 

In another incident, a driver of a pickup van died after it was hit by a state-owned bus at Karandighi in Uttar Dinajpur on Monday morning. Berhampur bound bus collided head-on with the pickup van and it overturned on a nearby ditch. Nearly 50 passengers who were travelling in the bus suffered injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital. Police said that the bus was at a top speed when the accident took place. The driver applied the brake but could not stop the vehicle. Finally the vehicle hit the pickup van and overturned. Police have arrested the bus driver. 

In yet another incident, a college student Md Alam died when his bike hit by a pickup van at Harsihchandrapur in Malda on Monday afternoon. Police said that three persons Md Alam, his wife Babi Khatun and Alam’s friend Pintu Das were going to Harishchandrapur College on a motorcycle when a pickup van hit the bike from the opposite direction. 

Alam died on the spot while the two others suffered serious injury. Local people took part in the rescue operation and rushed the injured to a nearby hospital. An irate mob put up a road block following the incident. The situation was brought under control after a huge contingent of police was deployed. The local people told the police that the driver of the pickup van was in an inebriated state. They demanded immediate arrest of the accused driver. 

On Monday a Kolkata bound bus overturned at Bethra more on Kona Expressway in which two passengers were injured. They were taken to a nearby hospital.
