Six killed, 15 injured in road accidents

Six people were killed while 15 others injured in two separate road accidents that took place in Birbhum and North Dinajpur on Tuesday, police said. 

Sources said a Durgapur bound bus after it started off from Suri with 30 odd passengers on board collided with a truck which was coming from the opposite direction near Joydev Kenduli. Five passengers died on the spot while 15 others were admitted to Suri district hospital. 

Police said when the ill-fated bus reached near Joydev Kenduli area it lost its control and collided head on with a truck. The bus overturned after the collision. The truck driver, however, fled the scene after the incident. Police have seized the two vehicles and they were conducting search operation to arrest the truck driver. The condition of some of the injured victims was stated to be critical. 

In another incident that took place at Itahar in North Dinajpur, a man identified as Himangshu Biswas (40), who was walking along the pavement on National Highway 34, was killed after being hit by a vehicle. 

The local people staged demonstration at Bekiadanga area to protest against rash driving. 

They alleged no steps have been taken as police extort money from the drivers. The mob also ransacked the vehicle after the incident. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
