Six cops suspended for illegal custody

Six policemen, including a station house officer (SHO), were suspended on Tuesday for keeping seven minor boys in police custody for three days in connection with a case of theft, said police.
‘We were kept in a room and we were handcuffed. We had no idea why were we in police custody. We were brutally beaten up and were never asked for food,’ said one of the minors.
SHO Sunil Kumar was deputed at Vijay Vihar police station where the minors were kept in
illegal police custody from 25 to 27 March.

Head constable Lal Singh, and constables Rahul, Rajkumar, Subhash and Akhilesh were suspended for detaining seven minor boys for allegedly stealing around 14 kg of plumbing material.
They were let off after police could not find any evidence against them.

Meanwhile, taking a serious view of reports of children being arrested and allegedly tortured by Delhi police to make confessions, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said it will enquire into the matter.

‘It is a case of serious violation of child rights and the Commission would inquire into the matter. We will also speak to Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar and seek his explanation’ NCPCR member Yogesh Dubey said. ‘Children under any circumstances can’t be handcuffed and held. We will make sure that strict action is taken against the guilty police officers.

We will also take action for rehabilitation of these children,’ he said. Dubey said NCPCR will ask the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to take up the issue seriously.
The Women and Child Development ministry has also sought a probe into the matter.
