Singapore businessmen should expand to India, says Dy PM

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on Wednesday asked his country’s local industry to explore more business opportunities in India.

‘Given India’s rapid development and big domestic market, SICCI can tap on its extensive business networks to help its members and other Singapore companies expand their businesses in the Indian market,’ Teo said at the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) annual dinner and dance and entrepreneur awards 2012.

SICCI on Wednesday honoured Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata with the SICCI-DBS Singapore Indian Businessman Award.

Teo told SICCI to help its member companies to access opportunities through the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement.

Teo also highlighted the importance of recognising Singaporeans and Indians who actively promote relations between the two countries. ‘Indeed, our bilateral relations with India cannot be driven by the two governments alone, but must be complemented by good business connections, and strong people-to-people linkages,’ stressed Teo.
