Show of support to FDI at CM’s house

A mammoth gathering on Monday came out to support the decision of the Union government on FDI in retail and gathered at the residence of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The CM, while addressing a huge gathering of persons from all sections of the society, said the Congress-led government has decided to amend the existing Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee [APMC] Act to ensure implementation of FDI in retail at the earliest. Dikshit said Delhi has become the first state to express its commitment to implement FDI.

Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma also addressed the gathering and said the decision of the union government is final. He said the decision has been taken keeping in view the ground realities of the country.

Dikshit said the gathering was a testimony to the fact that entry of FDI was not harmful to ‘Aam Adami’. She said, ‘Those who are opposing the entry of FDI in retail have nothing to do with the welfare of people. In fact, they are working against the interests of the nation. They do not want to see influx of foreign exchange earning for our country. We are sure that FDI will bring in lakhs of employment opportunities for the youth.’

The Congress stressed that FDI in multi-brand retail would not pose a threat to small shopkeepers and said it would hold a rally, to be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in the capital on 28 October at the Ramlila Ground to explain the economic move to the people.

Dikshit said the rally would be addressed by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders.

Meanwhile, Sharma slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] for trying to ‘mislead’ the country on the issue and said the United Progressive Alliance [UPA] government has taken the decision on FDI in multi-brand retail with ‘conviction and clarity’ and there will be no rethinking on it.

Parliamentary secretary to chief minister Mukesh Sharma said 25,000 persons have expressed their support for FDI in retail and its immediate implementation in Delhi.
