‘Should get back civic services and grants’

The three Municipal Corporations of Delhi-South, North and East MCD have asked the Delhi government to return civic services taken from them along with grants as per 74th amendment of the Constitution on strengthening of local governance. With the trifurcation of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, the financial condition further weakened due to transfer of services to various other departments.

“Delhi government will have to return civic services taken from Municipal Corporations along with grant and work as per 74th amendment of Constitution on strengthening of local governance,” said Standing Committee Chairman of South Delhi Municipal Corporation Subhash Arya. The corporations said that for the past 15 years, the Delhi government had transferred different civic services such as Jal Board and fire department which was previously under the Corporation. Arya said government will have to pass a proposal to strengthen the Corporation along with grant for better delivery of services.

“EDMC is also looking forward to strengthening its position.  With the trifurcation, things have gone haywire. Now, we want the government to return some civic services along with grants to us,” said EDMC Standing Committee Chairman BB Tyagi.

After trifurcation in 2012, the financial condition of all the three Corporation furthered weakened due to transfer of services.
