Shikhar ton fashions Delhi’s victory

Delhi skipper Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten 116 ensured the home team six points as it chased down the target of 270 set by Maharashtra on the final day of their Ranji Trophy tie at Roshanara Cricket Ground on Tuesday. Delhi (273/3) raced past the target in 65.3 overs with seven wickets to spare as Dhawan and his men took lacklustre Maharashtra bowlers to cleaners. Mohit Sharma, Mithun Manhas and Vaibhav Rawal chipped in with valuable contributions to fashion Delhi’s first outright win of the season.

Earlier, Maharashtra began with a bang with Shrikant Mundhe getting rid of opener Unmukt Chand (2) who dragged one on to his stumps. However, skipper Shikhar Dhawan and new man Mohit Sharma didn’t let the momentum shift towards the visitors as the duo negotiatedf Samad Fallah and Mundhe comfortably, building a fruitful partnership. Mohit brought up his second half-century of the season with the help of nine boundaries as Delhi kept maintaining a good run rate, rotating the strike with ease.

Fallah finally provided the break through just before lunch, trapping Mohit (51) plumb in front. Shikhar and Mithun Manhas then ensured the hosts didn’t lose any further wicket as Delhi went into the break at 100 for 2 in 33 overs.

In the second session, Shikhar brought up his fifty as Delhi started to take the match away. Manhas too got in the act and used the long handle to great effect, spanking Nikit Dhumal for three sixes and four boundaries. Manhas reached his fifty off just 38 deliveries. Delhi scored a whooping 92 runs in just 15 overs to take the game away from Maharashtra.

After Mundhe dismissed Manhas, Vaibhav Rawal stepped in and got into the act along with Shikhar as the duo unlished a flurry of boundaries. Dhawan brought up his 16th first class century (185 balls) and then finished the chase in style, hitting a six and two fours off Sngram Atitkar to finish the game before tea . Dhawan was well supported by Vaibhav Rawal, who remained unbeaten on 35.
