Shame City: Medical student gangraped in moving bus

In yet another dastardly case of gang-rape in the national capital, a 23-year-old girl was allegedly raped and her friend beaten up by six unidentified men in a moving chartered bus in up-market south Delhi locality on Sunday night. Jyoti (name changed) is battling for her life, as she received severe injuries during the incident, whereas her friend, identified as Avninder Pratap Pandey, 28, was discharged. Ram Singh, driver of the bus, was arrested late in the evening on Monday. Two others, identified as Vinay and Kalu, were also arrested. Earlier, it was alleged that Singh’s brother Mukesh was driving the bus at the time, apparently in an attempt to mislead the police.
Mukesh and two others unidentified accused are absconding as of now. Singh hails from Rajasthan and currently resides in R K Puram, south Delhi, along with his brother. ‘The other accused were Singh’s friends,’ a police official said. ‘Two travel agents from Noida are also being questioned at Hauz Khas police station,’ the official added. According to the police, the first call about the incident was received around 10.22 pm by the Gurgaon police. ‘The victims were thrown out of the bus at Mahipalpur U-turn. A worker at a nearby construction site saw the injured and made a PCR call.
The call first went to Gurgaon police, which was later transferred to Delhi police,’ a senior Delhi police officer said. The victims were taken to the Safdarjung hospital, where Jyoti is said to be critical. The victims had left the Select City Walk mall after watching a movie around 8.30 pm on Sunday. From there, they went to Munirka in an auto-rickshaw. As the girl is a resident of Uttam Nagar area in west Delhi, the victims then started looking for a mode of transport.
‘A white-line chartered bus came to the stop and conductor told the victims that it was going to Dwarka. The bus had a few more commuters at the time. After sometime, other commuters got off and it was then that the accused started arguing with Pandey about roaming with a girl alone,’ the police officials said, adding that, ‘When he resisted, they hit him with a rod.’
The girl was then forcibly taken to the driver’s cabin and was gangraped. ‘The assailants also indulged in unnatural sex, and reportedly used the iron rod as well. The girl was beaten up mercilessly. They took the bus to Dwarka and then came back to Mahipalpur U-turn,’ the police officials added.
Jyoti, who has done a paramedical course from Dehradun, is working as an intern with a private hospital in north Delhi, whereas Pandey works as a software engineer with HCL and stays in Ber Sarai area of south Delhi.
Police have registered a case of robbery, rape, abduction and criminal conspiracy at the Vasant Vihar police station, and a dozen people have been detained. Two sketches have also been prepared by the cops. The bus was identified using CCTV footage.
