Shahi Imam urges Muslims to vote for Congress, TMC

An influential religious leader, Bukhari has appealed to Muslims to support the Congress and its allies to ensure that secular votes are not divided. He also announced support to the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and Congress ally RJD in Bihar.

‘For the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, I announce support for the Congress. We have to fight unitedly against communal forces,’ he said at a press conference. ‘The biggest threat to our country is the treat to its unity, integrity and secularism. Millions of Indian people wish for a strong, united, developed India sans corruption, communalism, oppression and exploitation,’ Bukhari said.

‘Detailed discussions were held with the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, over issues concerning Muslims like riots, education, employment, implementation of the recommendations of the Sachar committee and the Ranganathan Mishra Commission and the reassurance on the safety of the lives and properties of Muslims,’ Bukhari said.

Bukahri slammed Samajwadi party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, saying that on the occasion of the previous assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Muslims had extend support on written and verbal assurances of the Yadavs. In its two years in power, the Samajwadi Party did not meet the promises it made to Muslims. ‘Not to speak of the destruction of lives and properties of Muslims in more than one hundred communal riots,’ he said.
