SFI rally spells misery for commuters

Traffic in the central business district has been thrown out of gear on Wednesday due to a rally organised by SFI supporters protesting against Tuesday’s incident of lathicharge at Burdwan.

SFI supporters from different colleges in the city and its adjoining areas gathered at Entally crossing and marched up to Moulali. They also put up a roadblock at Moulali. Vehicles on almost all the important thoroughfares including SN Banerjee Road, APC Road, Lenin Sarani and AJV Bose Road remained stranded at one place for around an hour due to the rally. The situation turned worse as some supporters of Chatra Parishad joined the rally. Initially they just had plans to march from Entally to Moulali but later decided to put up a road block and it made the task quite difficult for the police. Though police tried to pass the vehicles using one flank of the roads, but it became tough to keep the vehicles moving after around 15 minutes the rally had started. Students of some schools who were returning home in school buses had to face problems. The children had to remain seated in the bus for more than an hour as the vehicle was caught in the traffic jam at the same place. Sayantan Ghosh, a class IX student, said he got delayed in reaching NRS Medical College and Hospital where his relative is admitted and it was important for him to reach there on time to speak to a particular doctor.
