Several injured in clash near New Jalpaiguri area

Tension ran high in the adjoining area of New Jalpaiguri station on late Thursday night following a clash that broke out between two groups triggering tension in the locality.

Police said that the two groups clashed with each other over the possession of the area.

Police have held some people creating trouble in the area and seized fire arms from some of the accused. Police have started a probe into the incident.

The local residents said that a little after midnight they heard the sound of a clash that broke out between two local groups which tried to take possession of the area.

The group members equipped with arms pounced on one another in which many were injured on both sides. After being informed, a huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.

Police said that the miscreants pelted stones on their rival group. Many nearby shops and houses were also damaged in the incident.

Police had a difficult time to pacify the irate mob that went on a rampage ransacking some of the stalls situated on the road.

The local residents alleged that some inebriated men headed by one Joydip Nandi attacked another 
group led by one Prasenjit Roy and this had led to a clash at Bhaktinagar area on late Thursday night.

Among the injured, the condition of one Prashanta Das is stated to be serious. There was a similar kind of clash which broke out in the same area.

During that time too police had arrested some local anti-socials. A huge contingent of the police force reached the spot and brought the situation under control after putting an effort for nearly three hours.

The incident had spread tension among the local shop owners that many of them did not know if they would open their shops.

Police have been examining the CCTV footages that they have collected from the spot.

As per the preliminary investigation, police officers suspect that taking control over the area was the main cause that had led to the clash between the two groups.
