Septuagenarian strangled to death while sleeping

A gardener, Devi lived in a slum next to the garden in where she worked. Survived by her three daughters, all of whom are married, one of her daughters used to live with his husband, Avdesh and their children at Devi’s place, said police.

Investigators said that after the incident came to light, Devi’s son-in-law has been missing. Sources said that since Avdesh, Devi’s son-in-law was unemployed, he used to fight with Devi over money, alleged family members.

According to the police, the incident was reported at around 6 am on Tuesday when Devi’s daughter found her lying motionless on the cot in the courtyard of their house. She told police that after she found her mother dead, her husband went missing.

Police said that she raised an alarm and informed her neighbours who then in turn made the PCR call. Police rushed Devi to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on admission.

According to the police officer investigating the matter, Avdesh was unemployed. He used to often get into heated arguments with his mother-in-law. “Devi used to allegedly rebuke him as he used to ask her for money. He also had a heated argument with the elderly woman on Monday night over transferring the house in his name,” said an investigating officer.

The officer further said that the incident took place while Devi’s daughter along with her two children was sleeping inside the house while Devi and Avdesh were sleeping outside. A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered at the Narela police station. Further investigation is still on.
