Sense of relief among Kamduni residents after landmark verdict

The brother of the victim of the Kamduni rape and murder case on Saturday said that his family members had full faith on the state government and expressed satisfaction over the judgement.

Three of the accused Amir Ali, Ansar Ali Mollah and Safiul Ali Mollah have been given death sentences while the other three, Bhola Naskar, Imanul Islam and Aminul Islam were given life imprisonment. Two have been acquitted and one died during the trial.

The victim’s brother said that after getting a copy of the judgement the family proposed to move the higher court against two of the accused who had been acquitted on Friday.

The villagers also expressed satisfaction over the judgement. “We wanted the culprits to be hanged. The soul of the deceased who was tortured before she was killed will not rest in peace if that was not done.”

Expressing happiness over the judgement Mousumi Kayal and Tumpa Kayal who led the movement said that they had always wanted  that the criminals to be punished. “We do not belong to any political party and we simply wanted justice. They said how difficult it was to gather people to strengthen the movement.”

Unprecedented police deployment had to be made in Kamduni to protect the houses of the culprits from public wrath. Senior police officers through public address system asked the villagers to maintain their cool and not to get swayed by rumors.

The incident took place on June 7, 2013 when the victim was coming home from college.

Saiful Ali Mollah confessed that he had taken the girl inside the field and raped her. She had become unconscious and in that state she was again raped by the others. Later, they strangulated her to death and even planned to bury her body.
