An 83-year-old woman was murdered at her residence in Vikaspuri by unknown assailants who allegedly barged into the house, killed her and decamped with cash and valuables on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, identified as Joginder Kaur [83], lived in H block in west Delhi’s Vikaspuri area with her brother’s family. She was found dead on Wednesday at around 4 am at her house. She was lying in a pool of blood with her head smashed in. Apparently, the assailants have used a heavy object to attack her.

The police received the call at around 4.15 am when her nephew Gurbak, 71, found her body. Her room had been ransacked and looked a mess.

‘It look like a robbery attempt, but not much has been found to be missing from the room,’ said Gurbak to the Millennium Post.

Gurbak lives on ground floor with his family while Kaur was living on the first floor. Her husband Shobha Singh died 35 years ago.

According to Gurbak, his aunt used to visit Bangla Sahib gurudwara every morning, but on Wednesday when he realised that she has not made it to the gurudwara, he tried calling her on her mobile phone, which was switched off. In the meantime, he also found out that his house was locked from the outside. According to Gurbak, Kaur was alive when his son arrived at 12 am in the night from a party.

‘The killers might have entered the room through neighbour’s staircase,’ said Gurbak. He said that they had not only locked his house, but also the family living on the second floor.

He said nothing much has gone accept a bag, which had Rs 7,000 and some foreign currency. Her mobile was also missing, Gurbak said.

It is said that a gang of robbers is active in that area who supposedly follow the same modus operandi of locking in the immediate neighbours before they attack their target. Despite many such robberies, the police is yet to nab the members of this gang. The residents are now demanding that the police should increase security of the area, especially in nights.

‘Prima facie evidence suggest that robbery might be the motive behind the incident as victim’s room was ransacked,’ said Additional commissioner of police, V Renganathan.

A case has been registered and hunt is on to find the culprits, Renganathan added.
