Second day trial run on Maa flyover goes off smoothly

The Kolkata Traffic Police have become successful in making the two-way traffic movement on Maa Flyover without any traffic jam on the second day of the trail. It may be mentioned that the decision to allow two-way traffic on the flyover was taken after the completion of the construction work of the ramp connecting Maa Flyover with AJC Bose Road flyover. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the ramp on August 8.

Senior officers of the Kolkata Police’s traffic department had been trying to ensure a congestion free traffic movement on Maa flyover and the roads connecting it. On the first day of the trail on Thursday, the policemen had to pass through a tough time as traffic jam at Park Circus seven point crossing continued for hours soon after the two-way traffic on the flyover was allowed.

Sources said that senior police officers had been in work since morning on Friday to streamline the situation. Vineet Goyal, Additional Commissioner of Police (I), along with his colleagues at the spot had set the timings of all the traffic signals at Park Circus connector and on adjacent thoroughfares.
The timing of allowing vehicles through a particular intersection has been set in such a way that no vehicles were found getting caught in traffic congestion after coming down from Maa Flyover at the Park Circus end.

On Thursday, hundreds of vehicles were found standing in long queues at the same part of the flyover and Park Circus connector. The senior officers worked out after indentifying the problems those resulted to the jam.

An officer of the traffic department, who was also present at Park Circus on both days of the trail, said that on Friday traffic signals were operated manually. “The signals turned red and green according to the timing that was being set by the additional commissioner of police (I) on Friday and all problems were solved,” he said adding that if the same technique is used to manage the flow of traffic in the area then there is no question of traffic congestion with both-way traffic movement on Maa Flyover.

Traffic sergeants on-duty at Park Circus connector and adjacent roads have been made well aware of the technique using which the flow of traffic remained smooth the entire day and they have been asked to maintain the same.
