SC/ST aspirants ‘discriminated against’

On Tuesday, a large number of candidates belonging to the SC/ST and OBC categories and their parents gheraoed the office of the vice-chancellor of University of Delhi [DU] and the office of the dean of Students’ Welfare.

The aggrieved students were agitated over the fact that in the second allotment list of SC/ST, some of the candidates got wrong admission due to misprinting in the list. Many Science stream students were shown as Arts and Commerce Students and many Arts and Commerce students were shown as Science stream Students. According to Sources, this problem coupled with many other biases made reserved category students angry.

Sandeep Kumar, a prospective student belonging to the SC category said ‘we are agitating because despite meeting different college officials on several occasions and apprising them of the problems faced by the reserve category candidates, the university has not intervened positively and has merely bypassed the issues.’

He also added, ‘We were assured by the deputy dean that the problems would be rectified within an hour, but after waiting for more than two hours, the corrected list was not put up and when we tried to contact the office at Arts Faculty conducting SC/ST admissions, we were not allowed to enter the office.’

After the prospective students blocked the entrance of the dean’s office, the administration was forced to consider their immediate demand.
