‘Script is the real hero in my movie’

Director Shoojit Sircar says his mantra is to keep filmmaking simple and straight.

Shoojit, who directed movies like <g data-gr-id="33">Piku</g> and Vicky Donor, said he does not want to make opulent <g data-gr-id="34">films</g> unlike other directors.

“Let’s watch good films. I don’t want to spend unnecessarily. I know how to control my budget,” Shoojit told PTI after the home video launch of his widely-acclaimed Bengali production “Open Tee Bioscope”.

“I can’t speak about <g data-gr-id="31">others</g> but I don’t make such films.

For <g data-gr-id="37">me</g> <g data-gr-id="36">script</g> is the hero of the film. I had watched <g data-gr-id="39">Masaan</g> and intend to see Court, the Marathi film nominated for Oscars. Small or whatever budget, we should go for such works,” he said.

The director said women-centric films are the toast of the season.

“Such films are getting commercial success too as the audience are lapping them up.”

Shoojit, who is set to produce another Bengali film next year, feels the Bengali cinema has the beautiful legacy of Satyajit Ray and other stalwarts and the present-day directors are also exploring new subjects.

“There is a nostalgia trip in many of our films. It has similarities with European cinema in that <g data-gr-id="41">context..</g> I am proud of ‘Court getting Oscar call. But Bengali cinema has also that quality, Many of the present-day directors are doing a great job,”
he said.
