Scottish Church shut indefinitely following student unrest

The authorities of Scottish Church College decided to shut down the institute indefinitely following student unrest on Wednesday night.

Some students allegedly entered an administrative meeting, demanding return of Amit Abraham, the former principal, who resigned from the post a month ago. State education minister Partha Chatterjee was informed about the matter.

The decision of shutting down the college was taken after the incident. It is to be recalled that Seth Anandram Jaipuria College, which shut its operation due to the student clash had finally opened a few weeks ago. A team from the higher education department, which visited the college to take a stock of the situation, had reported the situation to the state government.

The state education department had decided to open the study and other activities of the college. The Scottish Church College incident is a grim rerun of that incident. The agitation started around 3.30pm on Wednesday and continued till 9.30pm. The group included 15-20 students from the college union and they started beating the door, when the building committee meeting was going on. A new building is coming up on the campus, being built with UGC funds.

Managing Rector and Secretary, John Abraham, who is also a member of the building committee, was present at the meeting. The students started giving slogans of ‘Go back Rector’.

The students demanded the return of Amit Abraham. They want him to come back as their principal. Amit resigned a month back. Former principal John Abraham was reinstated as managing rector. The appointment of John was not liked by the students union allegedly because John allowed excess admission this year.

The incident of Jaipuria College was mostly the same. The college administration had to stop the study and actives due to the alleged student clash. The college administration could not commence the academic activities and the matter was reported to the higher education department.

The team examined the position of the college and took a decision in the meeting to commence the study as soon as possible. However, the two groups of students started fighting in the college premises as the innocent students and professors were compelled to leave the Jaipuria College.

However, an education department source informed, the state government will take stringent action against the offenders in Scottish Church College.
