SC notice on regional quota in super speciality med courses

The Supreme Court on Thursday sought response from the Medical Council of India (MCI), governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on a plea challenging the regional reservation in admissions in super speciality medical courses.

A bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and A K Sikri also issued notice to Shillong-based North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science seeking its response on the plea. The petition, filed by Pravin Kumar Jha through advocate Ashwarya Sinha, alleged that the practice of making regional reservation in super speciality medical courses by University in Meghalaya and states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala is contrary to the Constitution of India.

It claimed that such practice adopted by these universities was a ‘colourable exercise of power’ since power to regulate higher education is solely vested with the Centre.
