SC modifies Madras HC verdict, allows grading of engineering colleges

The Supreme Court on Monday modified a Madras high court order and said that Anna University can publish the grading of only those engineering colleges whose question papers are being set by it.

The high court has recently asked the Anna University to publish the grading of the colleges, affiliated to it, based on their pass percentage.

Association of Management of Coimbatore Anna University Affiliated Colleges has moved the apex court against the high court order alleging that only pass percentage cannot be the sole criteria in deciding the quality of an engineering college.

‘We are limiting the order to the extent that it will be applicable to only those affiliated institutes whose question papers are being set by the Anna University,’ the bench comprising justices J S Kehar and C Nagappan said.

The bench also appointed advocate Amitesh Kumar as an amicus curiae to assist it.
Earlier, the high court had said that pass percentage and a college's past academic performance could help engineering aspirants and their parents make an informed choice of colleges, uninfluenced by advertisements of under-performing colleges that make tall claims.

Publication of the list of colleges bearing similar- sounding names, along with their counseling code, too would help students distinguish between genuine institutions and their namesakes, it had said.
