Santragachi bridge to remain closed again

The repairing work of the bridge had started on January 17 and movement of heavy vehicles was restricted on the bridge. The repairing work was, however, kept on a halt due to the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Examinations.

The city bound vehicles will be diverted though Andul-Alampur Road while the vehicles from the city that need to take National Highway 2 and 6 will be diverted through Nivedita Bridge. Plying of heavy vehicles will be allowed on GT Road and Foreshore Road from 10 pm to next day till 6 am.

Similar traffic arrangement was followed when movement of traffic on the bridge was restricted ahead of the examinations. A police officer said that the full fledged repairing work of the bridge will take place this time and the bridge may also remain closed for a long time.“We held meetings to assure that the vehicles get diverted through proper roads while the bridge remains closed.

Police officers and traffic sergeants will be posted at different points to avoid any untoward incident when the repairing work will continue,” the officer said adding that since the bridge, connects the city with the National Highways, hundreds of vehicles pass through the road every day.

So this is a challenge to maintain traffic in the area when the bridge will remain closed. The State government had taken the initiative to repair the bridge as its condition was in a dilapidated condition. Actor Pijush Ganguly was killed in a road accident on the bridge in October 2015 and accidents have become a daily routine due to the poor condition of the bridge.
