Santos thrash Bolivar 8-0 to equal own record

Santos equalled their greatest winning margin in the Copa Libertadores with an 8-0 humiliation of Bolivar at the Vila Belmiro stadium.

Brazil internationals Neymar, Elano and Paulo Henrique Ganso scored two goals each to set up a quarter-final duel against Argentina's Velez Sarsfield.

Spurred by the memory of their 1-2 loss to the Bolivians in La Paz April 25, when Santos' players were pelted with fruit by the home fans, the hosts shot to an 8-0 advantage in the 60th minute Thursday.

But the home side failed to extend the lead further, despite several chances to do so in the final half hour, Xinhua reported.

The result equals the club's record eight-goal winning margin set during the 1962 tournament when they defeated Paraguay's Cerro Porteno 9-1.

The team's other goalscorers were Alan Kardec in the 30th minute and Borges in the 60th.

In Rio de Janeiro, Fluminense set up a quarter-final showdown with Boca Juniors after edging out Internacional 2-1, thanks to goals from Fred and Leandro Euzebio.

Junior Fernandez and Angelo Henrique scored two goals apiece as Universidad de Chile outclassed Deportovio Quito 6-0.
