Samajwadi Party wins big in UP, BJP suffers setback

The Mainpuri parliamentary constituency has been retained by Samajwadi Party. The only three constituencies where BJP succeeded are — Lucknow (East) where its candidate Ashutosh Tondon won, Saharanpur Nagar where Rajeev Gumber got the success and Noida where Vimla Batham got the victory. Rest eight seats have been bagged by Samajvadi Party.

These seats are Charkhari (Kaptan Singh), Sirathu (Vachaspati), Balha (Banshidhar Bauddh), Rohaniya (Mahendra Singh Patel), Nighasan (Krishana Gopal Patel), Bijnore (Ruchiveera), Thakurwara (Nawab Jan) and Hamirpur (Shivcharan Prajapati).

BJP’s dismal performance is certainly a great setback to the kind of enthusiasm that was witnessed amongst the people merely four months back. It is certainly a challenge to its leadership posed by the father-son duo of the Samajwadi Party.

Overjoyed by Samajwadi Party’s performance in the bye-elections, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that the people of Uttar Pradesh rejected communal forces. The chief minister thanked people of the state for correcting the earlier mistakes of succumbing to communal powers.

‘People of the state have given an adequate reply to the communal forces and have expressed intention that they need harmony and brotherhood,’ Akhilesh told reporters here. ‘Communal forces tried to gain benefit by spreading hatred, but the people by their power of vote have defeated them,’ he added.

Akhilesh said the Samajwadi Party government in the state only concentrates on development works and has been working in this direction from day one and after bye-polls it would continue to work more responsibly. ‘We want to thank the people that at such a time, they have supported the Samajwadis and the direction in which the Samajwadi Party wants to take the state,’ Akhilesh said.

The assembly seats where by-polls were held include Saharanpur city, Bijnor, Thakurdwara, Noida, Nighasan Lucknow east, Hamirpur, Charkhari, Sirathu, Balha and Rohania, as also in Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat which was vacated by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. While BSP did not contest the by-poll, Congress and SP fielded candidates on all 11 assembly seats, whereas BJP contested on 10 and its ally Apna Dal on one.
