Salgaocar wary of upbeat Shillong Lajong

Derrick Pereira has been pragmatic all through the season, admitting there are “far better teams on paper” than Salgaocar Football Club this season. On the evidence of what East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Dempo Sports Club and Bengaluru FC have in their ranks, Derrick clearly has a point. But, what separates the Salgaocar FC coach from the rest is his pragmatism and his ability to prepare his team perfectly for every game.

So when his team is up against a rampaging Mohun Bagan, he knows beforehand what he wants: a point. And if they are to cross swords against Shillong Lajong FC — like on Tuesday at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda — there is little doubt that Derrick will smell full points.

“Nothing can be taken for granted in this competition. It’s not easy to play against Shillong Lajong. Didn’t you see what they did to Dempo?” asked Derrick.

If anyone needed reminding, Shillong Lajong tore Dempo’s reputation at home to pieces, scripting a convincing 2-0 victory. Even in the last game against Mohun Bagan, which they lost 3-4, their ability to fight back after being two goals down was not lost on Derrick. “After the problems at the start of the season, particularly with our strikers not available, I think we have done reasonably well,” said the Salgaocar FC coach.
