Sainik Farms dwellers face the music

Residents of  upmarket Sainik Farms in Delhi faced the music on Wednesday, when the property tax department of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) pulled off the ‘beat the drum’ exercise in front of the houses of tax defaulters.

According to the officials in the team, two defaulters immediately paid around Rs 1 lakh each, to get the drum beating stopped in front of their bungalows.

‘The property owners in the area are habitual defaulters. They never respond to our notices and reminders. Most of the them requested our team to not beat the drum in front of their houses and submitted in writing that they will clear all dues within a week,’ said B N Singh, assessor and collector in SDMC.  ‘If they don’t turn up, we will start the process of attaching their movable and immovable properties in a time-bound manner, to recover the amount,’ added Singh.

He added that since they are willful defaulters, prosecution will be filed against them in the court of competent jurisdiction under section 152A of the DMC Act, which provides for a punishment of rigorous imprisonment for a term not less than three months, but which may extend up to seven years, and a fine of not less than 50 per cent of the amount of tax evasion.

During the drum beating, Neelam Bhalla of Cariappa Marg handed over a cheque of Rs 1.02 lakh and Raj Kumar of Western Avenue gave a cheque of Rs 1 lakh. The duo requested for a week’s time to clear the dues.

According to officials, the drum beating exercise was performed in Western Avenue of Sainik Farm area. Major defaulters were  Raj Kumar Arora (Rs 17.27 lakh), Jagdeep Singh (Rs 13.06 lakh) and M P Srivastava (Rs 17.18 lakh).

Similarly, the drum beating was also performed in Jasola area of central Delhi area in front of the residences of major property tax defaulters.

According to the officials of property tax department, major defaulters in the area were Bright ways Housing and Development Ltd (Rs 1.39 crore), The Nani Suits Hotel (Rs 94.63 lakh), Green Leaf Hotel (Rs 83.11 lakh), Omaxe Square (Rs 83 lakh) and A-one Realtos Pvt Ltd- (Rs 49.12 lakh).
