Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has donated Rs 20 lakh for the construction of a school hostel in Ashui Pallimangal Vidyapith at Gopiballavpur in West Midnapore. This is the second time in the recent past that Tendulkar has given financial assistance to a school. A few days ago, he had donated Rs 75 lakh to Govindapur Makrampur Swarnamoyee Sasmal Siksha Niketan at Narayangarh in the same district.
The students of Ashui Pallimangal Vidyapith were overwhelmed with joy after they came to know that their cricketing icon Tendulkar had donated money for the construction of a school hostel. The school was set up in the 80’s. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had donated Rs 10 lakh for the school.
Many development works were taken place by the amount given by the Chief Minister, but some work could not be completed due to lack of funds. The headmaster of the school Tarun Kumar Chakraborty had made a pledge that he would turn the Vidyapith into one of the best schools in the Jangalmahal area and will try to explore various venues for fulfilling his dream.
While searching for funds on the internet, Chakraborty came to know about the MPLAD fund and had written to Tendulkar on December 28 last year seeking for an assistance of Rs 20 lakh for setting up a school hostel.
After considering the proposal, Tendulkar’s foundation had written to the District Magistrate on March 23, saying that they were ready to give the money to the school. As the Assembly election was going on at that time, the DM’s office did not inform the matter to the school authorities.
On June 7, the school authorities received a letter through the block development office saying that Tendulkar has consented to pay the amount. The school headmaster Chakraborty said that he never expected that Tendulkar would respond to his appeal and agree to pay the entire amount he had urged for.
He also expressed that they would like to invite Sachin to lay the foundation stone of the school hostel. It may be mentioned that Tendulkar’s foundation had earlier helped the development of infrastructure in various schools in the state.
