RTI activist abducted, shot at; manages to escape

An RTI activist was allegedly attacked by a group of unidentified bike -borne assailants while he was waiting for his friend on the roadside near his house in the Mayur Vihar Phase II area of East Delhi on Sunday night. 

According to the police, armed bike-borne assailants opened fire at RTI Activist Surjit Singh, who somehow managed to escape unhurt and did not sustain any bullet injuries. 

Sources said that Singh, an RTI activist has unearthed more than 300 cases pertaining to corruption and illegal land holdings.

Sources said that during the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the victim, Surjit Singh, was standing outside his house from where he was abducted and taken to a nearby area.

However, he managed to free himself from their clutches and started running. That was when the unidentified group of men opened fire at him.

Police said that they have registered a case of attempt to murder at the Pandav Nagar police station against unknown persons.

Sources said that the victim identified as Surjit Singh has claimed that he was trying to unearth corrupt dealings of some builders in Pandav Nagar area and recently, he had filed an RTI against the illegal construction constructed in Chandra Vihar area.

Singh was standing outside his house when two people came in their bike and started threatening him. They later took him forcibly to a nearby isolated area, said police.

The victim alleged that one of the builders of Chandra Vihar area was constantly threatening him of dire consequences and the criminals were hired by him. On the basis of victim’s complaint, a case was registered and police have detained three persons and recovered five empty cartridges from the spot.

Sources further said that Singh claimed that three days before the incident, a man had forcefully entered his house and threatened him of dire consequences.
