RSS asks BJP to douse ‘seat-war’ fire

A party insider said, the RSS leaders had discussions with top BJP leaders and suggested them to keep the sentiments of senior party workers and asked them to release the candidates’ list for Uttar Pradesh and Delhi immediately.

It seems that considering Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) factor, the BJP leadership is not in a hurry to announce the candidate list from Delhi. Since election in Delhi is scheduled on 10 April, the party wants to field candidates carefully to corner AAP. There are also reports of infighting over tickets in the state unit of BJP.

‘The Sangh does not want media to portray the alleged differences of opinion between party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, MM Joshi, Sushma Swaraj etc. The BJP leaders were asked to satisfy with the party tickets, which will be given to them and were asked not to make any controversial statement before the media,’ a senior BJP source said.

The party source further said, ‘The rift was also seen during the BJP’s national executive meeting at Ramlila Maidan where a section of workers were annoyed with party present Rajnath Singh’s for his behaviour towards supporters who had came from smaller states.’

The mess over party’s decision over candidates is sending a signal that the party president is facing criticism over fielding candidates against their wish. This became evident on Friday when senior BJP leader Giriraj Singh, upset over Nawada Lok Sabha seat being allotted to him, met party president at his residence in the national capital.

He wanted to contest from Begusarai constituency, but he was given ticket to contest from Nawada. The party has authorised Bhola Singh, the sitting MP from Nawada, to try his luck from Begusarai seat. Soon after the meeting, he said that he is going back to Patna and will decide on his strategy later.

Second in line who is angry over the party’s decision making body is actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha. His name was not announced in BJP candidate list from Patna Saheb seat. Many feel that he was punished for speaking against Modi in his previous speeches.

Since the last few weeks there are many leaders who had expressed their anger over party top leaders for being indifferent towards them when it comes to distributing tickets. Recently, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi refused to give up the Varanasi seat for its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. He reportedly had an argument with party president Rajnath Singh, which was backed by another leader Sushma Swaraj, who spoke in favour of Joshi. The situation was later brought under control after the intervention of LK Advani.

Also, there are speculations that party president is not willing to contest from Ghaziabad fearing defeat. There are reports that he wants to contest from Lucknow constituency, which angered sitting MP Lalji Tandon.

Considering the ‘vulnerable’ situation, the Sangh has advised party’s top brass  to make the seat arrangements considering party’s target to achieve the figure and not by making anyone happy. ‘The Sangh has also made it clear that it’s a political party and there should not be any attempt to hurt anyone by favouring candidates,’ a senior BJP leader said.
