Rourkela Steel Plant output grows 27% in in April-August

Rourkela Steel Plant, a unit of the Maharatna company SAIL, registered its best ever performance in the first five months of the current financial year with around 27 per cent growth in production.

During April-August period, the steel plant produced 12.42 lakh tonnes (LT) of  hot metal thereby clocking a growth of 27 per cent over the corresponding period last year, RSP said in a release on Friday. The same trend continued down the line and the Steel Plant recorded its best ever crude steel and saleable steel production for the first five months of the fiscal ended August. By producing 11.20 LT of crude steel and 10.62 LT of saleable steel, RSP recorded an increase of 22.2 per cent and 17.5 per cent respectively, it said.

The finishing lines too contributed in this success story by raising their performance bar. The old plate mill along with new plate mill rolled out 2.05 LT of plates which is a 10 per cent rise as compared to April-August, 2013. Similarly the hot strip mill made 6.96 LT of total HR coils and the cold rolling mill made 59,779 tonnes of cold rolled sheets and coils, thereby recording a growth of 3.8 per cent and 32 per cent.

The performance of the new units that have come up under the modernisation and expansion was noteworthy during the April-August period of this fiscal. The new coke ovens battery-6 registered an average daily pushing of 72.77 against previous year's 49.72, the release said.

RSP's CEO G S Prasad has expressed happiness over the performance of the plant and called upon the RSP to further improve performance in every respect.
