Howrah district court on Friday granted bail to Roopa Ganguly and Animesh Roy in connection with the assault of a women voter on April 25 in Aurobindo High School at Bamungachi in Salkia.

Soma Das, a voter had lodged an FIR against Ganguly and Roy on April 25 at Malipanchghara police station. Das alleged that when Ganguly who was a BJP candidate from Howrah North Assembly constituency had come out of the polling station at Aurobindo Ghosh School, some local residents gheraoed her and asked her not to intervene with the polling process which was getting delayed unnecessarily.

This angry Roopa shoved Das. Every television channel telecast this incident. Later, Ganguly said that she was being abused by some voters. The voters alleged that she was in an inebriated state. She was examining the voters’ identity cards of the people. This had delayed the polling process. The polling had to b suspended for 10 minutes. Later, it resumed following the intervention of senior officers. Meanwhile, long queues were seen outside the booth. The voters who were standing there, braving excessive heat gheraoed Ganguly and asked her not to intervene with the polling process.

Ganguly joined BJP a year ago at a function in Howrah Sarat Sadan in presence of the Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley.  She is now the president BJP Mahila Morcha.
