Role of media can’t be ignored: U’khand guv

Stressing the importance of media in democracy, Uttarakhand governor Aziz Qureshi said, ‘The role of media can’t be ignored in strengthening Indian democracy. During freedom struggle, many nationalist leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Azad started their own newspaper to disseminate their message and motivate common masses for the single goal of achieving Independence. Since then, media has played a long innings.’

The Uttarakhand governor was speaking at symposium on ‘Role of Communication in Crises’ organised by Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) at the auditorium of Raj Bhavan in Dehradun on Saturday evening. He also inaugurated the Dehradun chapter by the PSI thus heralding a new chapter in the hill state.

He criticised the media, saying that while covering rescue and relief operations in the disaster-hit areas of higher hills, a  lop-sided picture of the event was given. ‘They praised only army, but forget to highlight the bravery deeds of local police and local people in rescuing stranded pilgrims/tourists. Media should avoid the role of adventure media, and should stress on actual facts and figures. In fact, media can write new chapter and new history to the development of our state.’, he said.
