Rohtak shootout: Kabaddi player’s murderers arrested

Gurgaon Police on Monday arrested three accused who were involved in the murder of the national-level kabaddi player who was shot dead in Rithal village of Rohtak five days ago.

The incident took place when 24-year-old Sukhvinder Singh was returning home after practice on March 16. He was approached by two men on a two-wheeler who then shot him twice in his chest and once on the head. This incident of murder was captured on a CCTV installed at a house near the crime spot.

Crime unit-3 of Gurgaon Police in Palam Vihar had received a tip-off on the night of March 20 that five men in white Scorpio car were carrying weapons and moving towards new Dwarka Expressway. Sources have also revealed that these five men were also involved in looting cars that were seen coming from new Palam Vihar towards Daulatabad.

“Two teams were formed and immediately rushed to the spot. On reaching the spot, we saw that these men were forcing a man to come out of his car on gun point,” Balbir Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) said. All of them were nabbed from the spot. The police recovered a revolver, three country-made guns and 9 cartridges. All the five accused have been booked under Sections 401, 398 of IPC and under the Arms Act.

The five accused have been identified as Rakesh, alias pappu, of Panipat, Anil alias Dhaula, of Jind, Anil alias leela, from Sonepat, Ankit Khatri and Parminder alias Bhola, from Rohtak. It was during the investigation that the police got to know that two of the five arrested people were also behind the murder of the Kabaddi player. “Rakesh and Dhaula along with their other accomplices Leela and Amarjit, alias Jeetu, planned the kabaddi player’s murder,” DCP added.

Sources have also revealed that Rakesh who was also involved in a double murder case in Panipat along with Leela and Dhaula, had Rs 50 thousand announced on his name by the Haryana Police. “The first murder he (Rakesh) committed was in November 2015 and the second of the kabaddi player on March 16,” Singh added. All the others have been booked for murder, attempt to murder and robbery in other police stations across the state.

All the five accused were produced in the district court on Monday and have been taken into police remand for further interrogation, said the police official.
