Robbers strike in daylight, run away with Rs 5.25 crore in cash

At about 1:45 pm on Friday, five armed assailants, who are alleged to be professional criminals, robbed a cash van of a private bank of Rs 5.25 crore at gunpoint. The guard of the van Munna Singh was shot at. He later succumbed to the injuries at a city hospital. The incident took place in D-Block of Defence colony.

The robbers parked their stolen Hyundai Verna with the number plate HR26-A-Q0051 outside the Nature's Basket showroom in the Defence Colony area. The moment a Maruti Eeco cash van of ICICI Bank came from the service lane, Verna blocked its way. Two robbers with arms came out of their car and dragged the cash van driver out on the road. The security guard of the cash van tried to stop the robbers and was shot at. He was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Soon, the robbers got inside the cash van and fled away with the cash in it. They left their Verna at the scene of the crime. Later, the police found that the robbers' car was stolen from Faridabad a few days back.

Though the police claim to have sounded a red alert immediately, the robbers drove the cash van to the Hauz Rani area, which can easily take about 15 minutes.

The Delhi Police has constituted special teams, including from its Crime Branch and the forensic department, to investigate the matter. They have taken both the vehicles in their possession. According to a senior police official, a few gun shells of the 7.62 mm caliber were recovered from the crime spot..

The cash van belongs to an organisation called Premier Shield Pvt. Ltd, which is registered as a cash replenishment agency. At the time of the incident, the van was on the way to an ICICI Bank ATM in Lajpat Nagar. A bank spokesperson said, 'The van and the guard did not belong to ICICI Bank.'

A senior police official said that there are CCTV cameras all around the crime scene. 'We have recovered all the footage of the CCTV cameras that are installed outside the showrooms of D-Block, Defence Colony, and are investigating,' he added.

According to the official, the robbers had visited the area before committing the crime. He said that the sketches of many well-known inter-state criminals are being shown to eyewitnesses. 'We are coordinating with the police forces in the NCR, as there is a possibility of the involvement of an inter-state gang in the incident,' the official added.
