Road rage: judges paid for sticker on car

The 'court' sticker on the windshield of the car was apparently the reason why three judges were attacked by four bike-borne persons on Thursday.

'All four persons — including Anil Raj, his brother Sunil Raj, Rohit and Prashant — have been arrested and charged with attempt to murder in connection with the case,' said Dharmendra Kumar, Special Commissioner (Law and Order). In the attack, Metropolitan Magistrate Ajay Garg suffered head injuries. Additional Sessions Judges Inderjit Singh and M K Nagpal escaped unhurt. The  incident took place in Dakshinpuri last evening. Their driver Chaman Lal was also injured in the attack.

Reportedly, the one of the accused, Raj, saw the sticker and became very agitated. 'He said this judge had sent him to jail many times and he should not be left alive. He then asked his friend to call other associates, as well,' said police.

Their driver, Chaman Lal, said, 'They used bricks to attack the judges.'

Meanwhile, the Special Commissioner appealed to people that in case of road rage, they should write down the numbers of the vehicles and inform the police.

He said Anil Raj, who is a salesman in a south Delhi mall, was previously involved in two cases while his brother is unemployed. Rohit is into purchase and sale of scooters while Prashant is a hairdresser.

In the complaint filed with the police, Lal has said he was driving the government vehicle,  which is used as a 'pool-car' to take the judges home. When it reached Dakshinpuri, a speeding motorcycle hit the vehicle.

'I saw the motorcyclists had fallen on ground. After some heated arguments, the matter was about to be solved when one of them saw the sticker. Then some of their associates came. Meanwhile, Raj threw a brick on Garg and broke the windows of the car. The other two judges saved themselves by hiding behind the seat,' said Lal.

Lal also claimed that Anil Raj came to AIIMS Trauma Centre after hitting himself with bricks to frame the judges. 'We have registered a case under Sections 332 (hurt), 186 (obstructing public servant), 353 (assault), 279 (rash driving) and 307 (attempt to murder) against them,' said Kumar.

DELHI LAWYERS OBSERVE STRIKE

Protesting the attack on three judges by bike-borne men in yet another incident of road rage in the capital, lawyers in all the six district courts of Delhi on Friday observed a one-day strike, paralysing legal work, a lawyers’ body said.

‘We condemn the attack on three judicial officers of Saket court complex,’ said Kuldeep Sehrawat, chairman of the District Courts Bar Association Coordination Committee. What will be the condition of common masses, he asked, when city judges are not safe.

Madan Lal, president, Saket Court Bar Association, said government must provide proper security to judicial officers. He said that one of the arrested person involved in this case was also named in four other cases.

The strike paralysed the work at all six city courts—Saket, Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Karkardooma, Rohini and Dwarka.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ajay Garg, Additional Sessions Judge M K Nagpal and Additional District Judge Inderjeet Singh were attacked by four young men on two motorbikes on Thursday.
