Rly seeks panchayat’s help to prevent level crossing mishaps

Expressing concern over accidents at unmanned level crossings, Railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Wednesday sought involvement of panchayats to create awareness regarding precautions to be taken at such crossings to prevent mishaps.

‘Panchayats and village elders could be involved in this awareness campaign so as to sensitise road users about the hazards at unmanned level crossings,’ Bansal said at the General Managers conference here. There are about 15,000 unmanned level crossings in the country and the Railways will eliminate these crossings completely in a phased manner, he said.

Seeking to minimise human errors which sometime cause accidents, the Railway minister said corrective measures like proper training and counselling of safety staff should be taken to address the issue.

Emphasising on cleanliness on trains, in station area, at platforms and the surroundings, Bansal called upon the General Managers to personally take interest and undertake regular monitoring on these fronts.

Referring to catering services, he said, ‘The catering complaint number should be popularised so that people may send their complaints and get redressal of their grievances.’

‘It is heartening to know that Indian Railways has entered the prestigious one billion tonne select club in freight movement joining with China, Russia and USA’, Bansal said.
