Rise and write

And Still I Rise is a gender re-education programme using art and the written word. An exhibition and a series of 10 workshops will be organised, designed and delivered in which up to 20 teenage girls will be encouraged to write letters about their aspirations.

The Exhibition will showcase a collection that will focus on a hopeful determination to rise above difficulty and discouragement.

This is a central theme of the exhibition and education programme, which aims to provide hope against stereotyping by raising awareness of gender discrimination and the impact of gender stereotyping on limiting opportunities for women worldwide.

Anand Kapoor and Elizabeth Rogers have curated the exhibition for Creative Services Support Group, based on one of Maya Angelou’s most famous collection of poems – And Still I Rise.

The Exhibition will feature the writings of young women in India and from around the world and bring together the similarities and differences; the hopes and dreams; the ambitions; with focus on the evolving role of the woman in the future.

The artworks reinforce the power of the written word across languages and cultural realms, and the inherent energy of art to transform beings and enrich their lives.
