The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded to reverse the environmental clearance given to the South Korean giant Posco’s steel plant in Odisha on Saturday.
The Central Secretariat of the Party in their official statement mentioned that the government should reconsider the recommendations of the National Green Tribunal under the Forest Conversation Act, which might create a resistance.
Criticising the approval given by the environment ministry to the steel plant project, it has demanded for re-consideration. It statement reads, ‘We are all for development with people’s consent.’
Sources said, M Veerappa Moily, now in-charge of the environment ministry, overturned the earlier decision and given a clearance for the project.
CPI alleged that the decision was taken by a sleight of hand de-linking the proposals of captive port and mining of iron ore from the proposal of the steel plant. It is well-known that the original proposal at Posco was for an integrated project.
