Residents of two villages clash over road construction

A clash broke out between residents of two adjacent villages following a dispute over construction of a concrete road at Kumargunge in South Dinajpur.

Police said a 2-km-long concrete road has already been constructed from Joydeb More to Subarna Sahid More. The problem cropped up as the authorities has decided to construct the road in Daspara first.

The residents of the village adjacent to Daspara claimed that earlier the contractor told them that the road in their village will be constructed first and restricted the workers to carry out the work in Daspara on Tuesday morning.

A clash broke out when the residents of Daspara asked them to go back to their village instead of creating any trouble. Villagers came out with logs and many were beaten up. They even pelted stones at each other. The workers had taken shelter in a safe place.

A large contingent of police was pressed and the situation was brought under control. Some were arrested while rests had managed to flee.

The construction work of the road has been stalled for the time being. A police officer said senior district officials have been informed. They will be visiting the place in two to three days and the construction work will start only after they give their decision.

Police pickets have been posted in the area to avoid deterioration of law and order situation in the area.

It may be recalled that similar incident had taken place in the area before the work to construct the road had started.

People from neighbouring villages had got engaged into a scuffle with demand to construct road in their village first.
