Residents allege authorities facilitate illegal construction

Saturday collapse of a building in north Delhi is not the first incident when illegal structures have crumbled in the national capital claiming lives. The residents of Tulsi Nagar alleged that local administration, civic bodies and police are involved in the nexus. They support illegal construction without checking the approval map passed by the authorities by taking hefty bribes.

The local residents allege that local MCD officials and local police usually take Rs 1-2 lakh per flat when construction starts. Many contractors and local builders’ nexus are active in the area from last five years in the Tulsi Nagar area with the support of local councillors, MCD officials and local police. They are facilitating the construction of illegal flats without any approved map.

There are around 300 buildings in the Tulsi Nagar area. These are between 25 and 50 square metres constructed by builders and contractors in the narrow streets. The biggest problem faced by rescue operation teams during such crises is that the cranes, fire tenders, ambulances find it difficult to move in the narrow streets.

Meanwhile, the local police claim that it is the responsibility of local councillors and MCD officials to curb the problem of illegal constructions. ‘Police can only prevent the illegal construction work once a complaint is made,’ a police officer said.

Earlier, last month a three storey building collapsed in Sadar Bazar area of North West Delhi which injured over a dozen people. A 30 sq yard three storey building collapsed in Jaffarabad on 8 July, 2013, in East Delhi which claimed one life and injured 15 people. At least 71 people were killed after getting trapped in debris and many were injured after a building collapsed in Lalita Park area of old Delhi.
