Repair works at Santragachi bridge begin, no entry for heavy vehicles for 15 days

The city police on Sunday stopped the entry of heavy vehicles on Santragachi bridge for the next 15 days due to some repair works. The bridge that connects the city with the National Highways was currently in a dilapidated condition and hence this had prompted the state government to initiate the repair work.

A high level meeting was recently held at Nabanna which was attended by several senior officials of the PWD and the commissioner of Howrah in which the decision was taken.  The work could not be done in February as Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Examinations are scheduled to take place during that time.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked the senior PWD officials to undertake repair works after a popular actor Pijush Ganguly died in a road accident on Santragachi bridge in October last year.
CM had also visited the bridge to take a stock of the situation.

The repairing work will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase the work commenced on Sunday and it will continue till January 31. The second phase of work will start on March 1 which is expected to be finished by March 15.

The light vehicles will be allowed to ply on the bridge from 5 am to 11 pm. The Kolkata bound vehicles will be diverted to Andul-Alampur road and the vehicles moving towards National Highway-2 will be diverted to Nivedita Bridge. Plying of heavy vehicles will be allowed on GT Road and Foreshore Road from 10 am to 6 am during these days.
