Reliance-run discoms yet to pay Delhi govt agencies

Reliance-led power distribution companies, BSES Yamuna Power Limited  and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BYPL and BRPL), have huge outstanding bills that they are to pay to the Delhi government-run power generation company and the transmission company, Delhi Transco Limited.

Despite several reminders, the discoms are yet to pay their dues, while both Delhi government agencies are suffering major financial crunches.

A few months back, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had a written a letter to Anil Ambani, chairman of Reliance Infrastructure which runs the two power distribution companies, BYPL and BRPL, and expressed shock at the fact that the two Discoms owed money to the tune of Rs 3,337 crore to the two Delhi government-run power generation and transmission companies.

According to power ministry sources, the Chief Minister had requested in her letter that Reliance Infrastructure should immediately provide financial assistance to its two discoms so that they can pay the amount.  ‘But BSES has paid only Rs 50 crore out of the 3,337 crore due,’ said a source.

According to official sources in the Delhi government, ‘The monthly fuel expenditure for power generation is Rs 200 crore, but the generation company has hardly Rs 150 crore. If both the discoms do not pay their dues immediately, then power generation will have to stop. The power supply situation would have been worse, but for the generosity shown to the discoms by the Delhi government, in the interest of the consumers.’

The official added, ‘The situation of these two companies has become untenable and Reliance Infrastructure should immediately support BSES companies in the form of cash infusion, so that outstanding bills can be paid without any further delay.’
