Relatives go on rampage at RG Kar hospital after death of patient

Tension ran high at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital late Monday night following a demonstration by some relatives of a patient who reportedly died of medical negligence.

Police said that a 23-year-old youth died at the hospital, as a result of which the relatives of the victim went on rampage and ransacked a portion of the hospital.

One police person was injured in the incident when he tried to prevent the mob from damaging the furniture inside the hospital campus.

The victim Biswajit Mullick, a resident of Belgachia road, was taken to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday evening with fever and respiratory distress.

The patient was allegedly released after a routine check up in the emergency ward of the hospital.

His family members have alleged that the condition of the victim first deteriorated after he went back home.

Mullick’s family again rushed him to the hospital, but he later died there.

The victim’s relatives alleged that the patient died as he did not get proper treatment at the hospital. They also alleged that some doctors and the police personnel, who were in the hospital, misbehaved with them when they raised the issue with them.

This eventually escalated into an agitation by the people. The relatives also alleged that the victim was released from the emergency ward of the hospital without proper diagnosis.

A mob soon started ransacking a portion of a building and damaged a vehicle inside the hospital premises protesting against the negligence by the hospital. The protestors also staged a demonstration on the road adjacent to the hospital, resulting in a traffic jam on the Jessore road.

A large contingent of police rushed to the spot and had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob. Police have started an investigation in this regard, but are yet to arrest anybody.
