Recreating the silver screen

Recreating the silver screen
An admirer of literature and cinema, Rini Dhumal was deeply moved by Aparna Sen's film about a beautiful Japanese girl who falls in love with a Bengali school teacher through an exchange of letters. Like this, her other inspiration also comes from various movies like Chitrangada, where Rituporno Ghosh's role inspired her.

Her discoveries of people and distant places provide visual reference for the works. Colour palette used are deep shades of ochre, maroon and indigo to set the mood that touch upon the loss of love and yearning for spiritual fulfilment.   People in her paintings are drawn against the deepening dusk or darkening skies, in moments of solitude. The Buddhist monks are in prayers, lost in meditation, while others are in postures that are dramatic and bold.
